Marya Laya Espaldon (Philippines), Researcher at World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) on January 1. Under the supervision of the Philippine Country Coordinator, she implements activities related to the documentation and comparative assessment of past and current local adaptive strategies and coping responses of local communities in Southeast Asian watersheds. B.P. Mallikarjuna Swamy (India), Scientist at Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Biotechnology (PBGB) on January 1. Renato Folledo, Jr. (Philippines), Associate Scientist at Social Sciences Division (SSD) on January 2. He plays a key role in developing spatially and temporally explicit models to map global hotspots of rice plant heat-stress. His office is located at Drilon Hall, x2887.
Mervin Manalili (Philippines), Assistant Scientist at Crop and Environmental Sciences Division (CESD) on January 4. He is working on characterizing rice genotypes for root and shoot response to drought. He also develops high-throughput screening techniques for traits contributing to drought tolerance. Maryrose San Valentin (Philippines), Researcher at Social Sciences Division (SSD) on January 4. She assists the Senior Research Manager in collecting data to meet research objectives of the project entitled NIA-IRRI Joint Research in Volumetric Pricing. She conducts farm level interviews in the study sites and assists in identifying problems and solutions during the conduct of farm surveys. Her office is located at Drilon Hall, x2438.

Reporting directly to Kshirod Jena, he provides support in introgressing functional genes associated with yield enhancing traits from diverse genotypes into elite indica rice cultivars by genomics tools. He also studies the expression of genes towards production of new ideotype of rice with high yield potential. Joining him is spouse Woobin Youn and sons Jiwon and Jimin. Sonya McGuinness (Ireland), Corporate Services Manager at IRRI India office on January 14. She ensures that there is an integrated and robust set of services to support the research programmes in India. In other words, she is the go-to person in Delhi for finance, HR, IT, procurement, transportation, contracts and other service functions and will work closely with her counterparts in Los Baños.

Nova Sarker (Bangladesh), HRS Business Partner at IRRI Bangladesh office (IBO) on January 20. Acting as a one-stop HR shop, Nova is providing staff in Bangladesh with support on issues related to staffing, compensation and benefits, workplace relations, and learning & development. She reports functionally to Fiona Farrell, HRS Director, and on a daily operational basis to Loretta Hempsall, the IBO Manager, Corporate Services.
Verna Jessa Marcelo (Philippines), Secretary III at T.T. Chang Genetic Resources Center (TTC-GRC) on January 21. She provides administrative support to the Genetic Resources Specialist and other GRC staff. Her office is located at KJ Lampe Building, x2385.
Timothy Russell (Great Britain), Senior Scientist at IRRI Bangladesh Office (IBO) on January 26. Reporting directly to Achim Dobermann, he provides strategic leadership and enables effective management of IRRI's major research and development programs in Bangladesh, with a particular emphasis on agricultural development in the southern area. He also liaises with a wide range of national partners, provides effective oversight and managerial support to IRRI activities in the country and seeks out new opportunities for expanding IRRI's research in Bangladesh.
